Aims & Ethos
At Lodge Farm we aim to provide a meaningful therapeutic education opportunity for young people who require an alternative experience instead of or to support a mainstream school place. All full-time students have an Education, Health and Care Plan as do the majority of our day placements. Many of our students have Social, Emotional and Mental Health difficulties and Communication and Interaction difficulties, including Autism, and have experienced failures in mainstream and special school situations. Our therapeutic approach and alternative setting along with our highly qualified and experienced staff team helps students with anxiety, including school phobia, who may be currently out of school.
We work successfully with young people who have been unable to achieve in mainstream and traditional special school provisions to build confidence, self-respect and a sense of value and achievement. We assist them in achieving their educational potential through the development of effective learning and employability skills. Our aim is to Make Education Real for our young people so when they move on from us, they do so fully prepared for the world of work, further education and independent living.
Curriculum
At Lodge Farm the emphasis is on meeting the needs of every individual young person who comes to us. We can offer a bespoke curriculum built on each student’s skills, knowledge and interests, whilst supporting their preferred learning style. Many of our students arrive with us operating at well below age-related expectations, so we will tailor a learning programme that is unique to them.
Though literacy and numeracy will be embedded within most activities offered to students, we are able to offer additional skills and experiences through a range of practical workshops developed with them in mind.
By having more control over their learning, young people begin to take responsibility for their own well-being as well as their health and safety. Over time they develop a sense of belonging which encourages their emotional growth. Through learning in a structured, respectful and therapeutic environment, student’s social skills develop and mature, having a calming effect on their behaviour.
Qualifications gained 2020-2021
Admissions
Lodge Farm receives referrals for a placement from nearby Local Authorities. We carefully consider all referrals. If we have a place available, students are admitted should we feel that they are able to take full advantage of the learning opportunities offered. We are guided by the recommendations on a young person’s statement of special needs. If we believe the young person would benefit from a place at Lodge Farm, a member of staff will usually visit them in their home and/or in their existing educational placement. Following this visit, an opportunity is provided for the young person and their parents/carers to visit the Farm, in order for them to decide whether they feel that they would like to consider attending the Farm should they be offered a place. Potential students are accepted on a ‘provisional’ basis for a ‘taster’ period. The length of this ‘taster’ period may vary from one young person to another, but is often approximately 2 weeks. We ensure that staff have sufficient time and opportunities to undertake further on-site assessments when a young person is experiencing transitional difficulties.

SMSC and British Values
At Lodge Farm students will develop their self-confidence, self-esteem and their own knowledge by taking responsibility for their behaviour. Through Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural lessons, they will learn how to make a positive contribution to society, including life at the farm.
At Lodge Farm we support the values of democracy, rules of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance of different faiths and beliefs. These are embedded within our curriculum and may be observed throughout the Farm as respect, kindness, honesty, hard work, cooperation, fairness, confidence, tolerance, politeness and responsibility.
We talk to and teach our young people about values, respecting similarities and differences, tackling stereotypes and understanding why some people discriminate. We aim to empower them to have a voice and to stand up against discrimination, valuing equality, tolerance and mutual respect. We plan to provide a rich learning experience that will have a positive impact on students’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development.
As well as promoting British values we would actively challenge pupils, staff or parents expressing opinions contrary to fundamental British values, including ‘extremist’ views and principles.
GDPR
Lodge Farm aims to ensure that all personal data collected about staff, pupils, parents, governors, visitors and other individuals is collected, stored and processed in accordance with the General Data Protection Regulation (EU) 2016/679 (GDPR) and the Data Protection Act 2018 (DPA 2018).
